April Bucket List

National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day(4/2)/Make Strawberry Jam/ National Grilled Cheese Day (4/12)

Even prior to the grocery store mayhem, I’ve never really kept bread in my pantry because I don’t eat it a ton so when I saw multiple “sandwich” days in the month, I decided I should make bread. I love homemade bread because it not only tastes delicious but also it makes the house smell heavenly. Also, a part of me feels like a pioneer woman every time I make it.

Now, as far as National Grilled Cheese Day goes, I decided to get creative. I love cheese of all kinds but of course in the midst of said crisis I didn’t grab any cheese because it didn’t occur to me. (I think I’m going to be saying that phrase a lot in the next few months.) However, I had a great opportunity when I went to a local restaurant for pick up. One of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had is the pimento and cheese from Newk’s. My Great Aunt Naomi used to make pimento and cheese and it was delicious but it wasn’t ever my go to sandwich however, what makes Newk’s version so incredible is that it is grilled like a panini. So while picking up lunch at Newk’s I grabbed a small container of pimento and cheese and made my own version with my homemade bread. It wasn’t remotely as tasty as the in store version but I’m still grateful in the midst of this quarantine to have a change of pace in my dinner options.

Much like cheese, I didn’t grab strawberries to make jam so I am adding that to my list of things to try when you can get supplies from town. Pioneer life again!

National Pet Day (4/11)

For National Pet Day, I decided to complete another of the “mythicality tasks” I’ve been working on for the last few years. You can find the post on April 30th.

Lavender Manicure

I knew this was going to be a disaster when I made it for April. Lavender is a very spring color but it is also a color that looks better on a woman of color than on someone with such pale skin and cool undertones. My hope was that I would have the chance to go shopping for a polish that would better suit my undertones but as nail polish isn’t essential I made do with the only option I had at my disposal. I did add glitter because glitter makes everything better. That’s a fact!

Read Poetry

For all my love of quotes and sayings, I’m not a great lover of poetry. I blame a large portion of this on the fact that I had to dissect so much poetry in my AP and Honors classes. I guess I never viewed it as something to enjoy but rather a unit to endure until we moved on to more interesting literature.

I definitely don’t have a favorite poet but I decided to read Shelley because, in truth, I’m fascinated with the fact that Percy’s wife, Mary, kept his heart (or other less romantic organ) in her desk until she died. One of the many strange cases of bodies not being completely buried that were covered in “Rest in Pieces” which I reviewed last year.

Being that Mary was what drew me to read Percy’s poems I decided to read “To Mary”, “To Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin” and “Love’s Philosophy”. While very sweet and romantic, I still don’t really like poetry.

Dye Easter Eggs

Being that we were stuck indoors for Easter, I decided to do a time-travel experiment to dye an egg…yes, just one egg. Apparently, Edwardians enjoyed giving out painted eggs for Easter but, much like us, they couldn’t just run down to the store and grab a packet of Paas so they used natural dyes. They would also blow the contents of the egg out and paint designs on them with wax to create patterns or pictures once dyed.

I decided that I wanted to try this method so I punctured an egg with a huge needle and blew out the insides to create a very delicate canvas. I then used the historically accurate eyeliner brush and Bath and Body Works candle to create a design. I figured crosses were both symbolic of our celebration but also doable from an artistic stand point.

Now, when it comes to natural dyes, we have all kinds of options. Unfortunately, most of those options come from things I don’t currently possess like onions and beet root. However, for some reason, I own about four billion containers of Turmeric which creates a beautiful yellow dye. I used water, vinegar and tons of Turmeric to create this beautiful concoction.

Being a traditional recipe, you have to let the egg soak overnight. Here’s the issue I ran into in this process…Empty eggs are buoyant little suckers and it wouldn’t stay in the dye. So, I stuck a bowl on it and the put a plate on top of that. It worked but only halfway as you can see from the next picture. Once, you scrape your wax design off you have a lovely Easter memento a la 1912.

While dying my egg, I decided to dye a piece of cotton just to see if it would work. It was a perfectly beautiful yellow shade and then I accidentally sprayed it with bleach while cleaning the kitchen so it’s kind of spotty now. Also, I’m not sure how well the color would hold up to washing. Many traditional dyes are “set” with stale urine or other such material and while I’m all about historical experimentation, I don’t think I’ll go that far!

Watch Easter Parade/ Make Resurrection Cookies

If you know me, you know I adore musicals of the 40s and 50s especially those starring Judy Garland. So, adding the fabulous feet of Fred Astaire could only make this movie an absolute delight. There are so many funny moments and the music is timeless. It’s one of those titles that I’ve seen a million times and can still gladly watch tomorrow plus it’s great for all ages. If you’ve never seen it I beg you to give it a shot, even if you think you don’t like musicals!

Per, the rest of my food challenges this month, I’ve had to put the Resurrection Cookies on hold as I don’t have crescent rolls. However, if you’ve never made these you essentially create a crescent roll tomb with a marshmallow inside and when you remove them from the oven the tomb is empty. A great reminder for the kids of what we celebrate!

Go for a Sunday Drive

At this point a Sunday Drive is about the only thing you can legally do outside your house, I have always enjoyed driving around town. I enjoy seeing random neighborhoods and real estate listings and all the people watching you get to enjoy while cruising about. Let’s be honest. Sometimes the best part of a vacation is the road trip.

International Children’s Book Day/ Spend a Day in Your PJs

I don’t have a children’s book to read currently but my FAVORITE books as a child included “Goodnight Moon”, “The Three Little Kittens Who Lost Their Mittens” and this super old book that belonged to my mother as a kid called “Nurse Nancy”…I think. Might have been a Golden Book?

Since, I didn’t have a kids book to read I just stayed in my PJs and read Anne of Green Gables. Sometimes, there is nothing more enjoyable than cuddling up with a blanket and a book on the couch. I love getting lost in other places through the eyes of some of my most beloved characters. I think Jo March put it best when she said, “Some books are so familiar, reading them is like being home again.” (Little Women)

National Siblings Day

While life has seen fit to give me many sisters of the heart, the Lord saw fit to give me only one brother and to be quite frank, he is such a character that I’m not sure I could handle more than one of him. We are six years apart, which means for the few first years of his life he was my living doll to play with and then he became the annoying little shadow. However, the older we have gotten we have become partners in crime and secret keepers. I’m very proud of the man he has become and all he has accomplished! I also appreciate that he hasn’t held all the times I accidently injured him against me.

Buy Flowers

Once again, flowers are not an essential I thought to purchase the last time I went to the story in March and when I brought my beautiful flowers in from the outside I was soooo disappointed that they brought in little gnats which were absolutely aggravating. So, when the time comes, I will purchase myself some beautiful flowers in celebration of the ending of this craziness.

Bible Journaling

I love being crafty because I’m not very artsy and I find that Bible journaling is a great way to reflect on the truths of God’s word while expressing the creativity He has given you. I use it as a way to relax and reflect while feeding my inner artist! Bonus: You don’t actually have to have talent to make something awesome. Much like many things concerning the Lord, He seems to take your best efforts and make something amazing out of it. The Lord’s words are a great foundation for anything.
