Life Lessons: Finding a Good Thing (Isaac)

Reading: Genesis 24

I’ve said it before but it still stands true… Relationships matter! Every single one of them. The people you do life with can make or break you and while you can’t always choose all your relationships you can use wisdom in the ones in which you do have a choice such as your marriage.

Abraham was very aware of how important the choice of a spouse could be because he had seen the blessing of a God-honoring wife on his own life. I’ve always wondered if his thoughts and concerns for Isaac’s wife ever turned to the promise his son was meant to continue. Did he realize that his beloved Isaac had a hard road of unknowns ahead that would need a partner built for that life? One that would also honor the Lord?

No life is easy and as Christians we have been warned that we will face troubles (John 16:33). Don’t you want a life partner that is chasing the same thing you are running after? Someone with the same hope and desires? The same motivations? Someone who will carry your name to the throne of God. Life is too hard to have a marriage not built on the same foundation.

Abraham also had a wise servant because he knew to be on the lookout for character which he found in Rebekah. Looks fade. Emotions waver. Jobs end. Character is what shows up in the tough times we’re promised so the wise at heart should be more moved by the beauty of someone’s disposition than their eyes.

This can seem like an overwhelming task to undertake in the best of times but ask the Father for wisdom as you approach relationships. He will give guidance to us when we ask. He will direct our steps and His purposes will win out IF we are in partnership with Him, as well, but remember, His wisdom and plan includes His timeline for those of use who’d like to rush ahead to the ending…

Today’s Prayer

Father, if I’m honest, relationships are so hard and my emotions make them harder. Please help me to see the truth of the decisions I make and not just the feelings behind them. Please give me discernment and wisdom in the choosing of the relationships that fill my life.
